When visiting California State University, Long Beach one has the ability to sign up for a meditation course in the school's "wellness" center. But, what does the word "meditation" mean? "The word meditation is so broad in scope, it's hard to nail it down, but in general, it is about learning how to control your mind," said Lindsey Moore, counselor at the Student Wellness Center.

She explained that some students come to classes interested in self-discovery and learn about how to control their minds.

"Some people come to the center with the intention of improving their life for a certain number of weeks or months or years," Moore said.

However, there are plenty of students who come into the program who have minimal interest in meditation but enjoy the center's resources, such as the free food and fitness center.

"I have to admit, I am there in the spirit of a gym rat," said Courtney Hughes, a Long Beach resident who has been taking classes here since she was a freshman in high school.

Students can take classes on subjects ranging from yoga to Tai Chi to breath work.

However, when it comes to meditation, most students are more interested in getting in touch with themselves, said Heather Johnson, director of CSULB's meditation program.

"It's a time for introspection, and students come here to focus on themselves," she said.

After the main class, students usually have the opportunity to practice meditation in a designated private space or in a tranquil setting.

Hughes said she found the center provided a great alternative to other times she has tried to meditate.

"It's nice to have quiet time," she said. "I've had a lot of difficult times."

Moore said the center's physical space offers a calming atmosphere.

"When you are practicing meditation, what you are doing is actively noticing your thoughts," she said. "It's kind of like a game, you can actually observe yourself."

Many students are skeptical about whether they have the patience necessary to pull themselves into such a disciplined state.

Shauna Fischer, a 20-year-old senior from Irvine, said she attended a previous session for the purpose of gaining focus for a school assignment.
